Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has criticized Nigeria’s political class for focusing on trivial matters instead of addressing the country’s urgent issues.

In a statement shared on his X handle, Obi condemned the current political environment as an embarrassing display, emphasizing that Nigeria is grappling with some of its most severe socio-economic challenges.

He pointed out that rising poverty, hunger, insecurity, and the growing number of out-of-school children demand immediate action.

“It is deeply troubling that Nigeria’s political leadership is rapidly descending into an embarrassing spectacle.

“We are at a time when our nation faces the highest levels of actual and multidimensional poverty, soaring infant mortality rates, millions of out-of-school children, and one of the most insecure and hunger-stricken environments on earth.

“Nigeria cannot afford to be governed like a reality TV show while millions suffer for so long. It is time for leadership rooted in character, competence, capacity, consistency, compassion, and urgency leadership that prioritises education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation,” he tweeted.

The former governor of Anambra State also expressed frustration that the national conversation is instead focused on controversies like sexual harassment allegations in the National Assembly, budget padding, and judicial decisions that could destabilize governance in various states.

Obi further urged politicians to stop defecting to parties where they believe they can easily manipulate elections, calling such actions a reckless disregard for serious governance.
