In response to Justice James Omotosho of the Abuja Federal High Court’s decision to sentence their son, Nnamdi Kanu, to life in prison, the traditional leaders and guardians of the ancient kingdom of Umuahia North LGA in Abia State have formally responded.

According to the traditional rulers, Nnamdi Kanu is not a terrorist, notwithstanding the court’s declaration that he is their famous son and Crown Prince.

They maintained that he is a freedom fighter who has continuously spoken out against his people’s marginalization and oppression.

Eze Innocent Adiele Nwaigwe, the chairman of the Umuahia North Traditional Rulers Council, Eze Chiabuotu Emelike, the secretary, Eze Nzenwata Mbakwe, and Eze Eddy Ibeabuchi signed the statement that the monarchs presented to the media on Friday.

“For over a decade, our son has stood before the courts of this nation, enduring trials, detentions, and unimaginable hardships. The recent judgment, though deeply painful to us as fathers and leaders, does not erase what we know in truth: that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not a terrorist.

“He is a freedom fighter who has consistently spoken out against injustice and the marginalization of his people,” the monarchs declared.

Continuing, they said, “We insist, as we have always done, that our son remains innocent of the charges brought against him.

“The decisions pronounced by Justice Gbenga Omotosho do not diminish his spirit, nor do they extinguish the hope of millions who believe in justice, fairness, and the rule of law. Justice delayed may be painful, but justice denied cannot stand forever.”

The monarchs pointed out that Nnamdi Kanu has the legal and constitutional right to challenge the decision all the way to the Supreme Court, noting that the wheels of justice, albeit occasionally moving slowly, would eventually grind toward truth.

The traditional leaders reiterated their demand that President Bola Tinubu grant the IPOB commander a presidential pardon in order to exercise the office’s prerogative of mercy.

The monarchs, who claimed that the Umuahia North youngsters were hurt by the ruling, urged the young people to be calm, peaceful, and restrained and to refrain from enforcing the law on their own.
