Nollywood stars, royal figures gather as major historical epic makes its debut

The highly anticipated historical drama, King Kosoko, The Battle for Lagos, has made its Lagos debut, attracting traditional rulers, cultural figures, Nollywood personalities and other notable guests to an evening celebrating Yoruba history and heritage.

The world premiere took place on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at IMAX Cinema in Lekki, ahead of the movie’s scheduled nationwide cinema release on Friday, August 28.

Produced by Teqsus Studios, the premiere featured a colourful red-carpet event attended by prominent members of the traditional institution, the Nigerian film industry and the broader cultural community.

Traditional rulers, high chiefs and members of the Kosoko royal family were among those present, underscoring the historical significance of the project.

King Kosoko, The Battle for Lagos chronicles the life of Oba Kosoko and a pivotal chapter in the history of Lagos.

The movie examines the political contest surrounding Lagos, its ties to the Benin Empire, struggles over trade and influence, and the broader effects of foreign intervention during the colonial period.

It also explores the relationship between regional politics, commerce and the transatlantic slave trade, while highlighting efforts to preserve Yoruba identity and Lagos’ sovereignty.

Central to the narrative is Oba Kosoko, whose leadership, political calculations and resistance to rival forces unfold amid betrayal, competition and changing alliances.

The film was directed by Adebayo Tijani and produced by Ayo Ajayi and Segun Ololo Kosoko, with Marc Adebesin serving as co-producer.

Its star-studded cast features Femi Adebayo, Tina Mba, Odunlade Adekola, Femi Branch, Jide Kosoko, Yinka Quadri, Dele Odule, Gabriel Afolayan, Adeniyi Johnson, Sola Kosoko, Aisha Lawal and Kola Ajeyemi, among others.

The filmmakers said the production was created to celebrate history, heritage and leadership while introducing an important chapter of Lagos’ past to modern audiences through film.

Following its Lagos premiere, King Kosoko, The Battle for Lagos is set to hit cinemas nationwide on August 28, allowing audiences across Nigeria to experience the historical drama and its depiction of one of Lagos’ most defining royal struggles.
