Northern coordinators discloses why they pulled out of October 1 EndBadGovernance protest

The organisers of the #EndBadGovernance protest in the 19 northern states have withdrawn less than 24 hours before the scheduled nationwide protest on October 1st, citing insufficient security measures taken by the organisers.

As per the coordinators, the decision to withdraw was made due to the inability of national organisers to settle the complex matters concerning the safety of demonstrators and preventing criminals from abusing the process once more.

The Northern Coordinators of the #Endbadgivernance Protest, Abdullahi Daura, the chairman, and Mohammed Musa Biu, the secretary, signed a joint statement in which they stated that participants were afraid of a recurrence of the violence that broke out in Kano, Kaduna, and other areas of parts of the north and do not want anything destructive.

According to the statement: “We have asked questions and wrote several requests for security cover at the convergence points in the north where people will join the protest action. But we are yet to get a clear answer and measures taken to avoid violence and looting of property.

“Against this background, we are urging all our members in all the nineteen states to obey the directives from the coordinators and pull out until we get clearance from security agencies.”

The coordinators reassured Nigerians that they would not back down from their determination to force the federal government to undo all the unfavourable policies that have brought about immense suffering, but they also clarified that their top priority is the lives and property of innocent citizens, which is why they had to withdraw for the time being.

In the message, members were advised to remain calm and peace for the North’s October 1 Independence Day celebrations.
