The leadership of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has voiced its dissatisfaction over a petition reportedly submitted by the Commander of the Mining Marshal Unit, ACC Attah John Onoja, to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions. The petition was said to relate to an alleged incident involving the assault and shooting of NSCDC mining marshals by police personnel, as well as claimed interference with ongoing prosecutions of suspected illegal miners arrested in Nasarawa State.
Previously, ACC Attah John Onoja had brought a case before the Senate committee, accusing elements within the Nigeria Police Force of engaging in illegal mining activities and obstructing enforcement efforts.
In response, CSC Afolabi Babawale, the National Public Relations Officer at NSCDC Headquarters in Abuja, issued a statement noting that Commandant General Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi was not pleased with the situation. According to the statement, the commander acted without clearance from the corps’ leadership, thereby exceeding his authority by filing the petition independently.
The statement clarified that the management does not endorse the petition and has ordered the officer in question to withdraw it immediately. This move is intended to support a peaceful and constructive resolution of the concerns raised, in line with the strong inter-agency cooperation that exists between the NSCDC and the Nigeria Police Force. It also reflects the collaborative relationship shared by the Inspector General of Police and the Commandant General.
Further emphasizing this point, the statement acknowledged the ongoing support the NSCDC has received from the IGP’s office. It highlighted efforts to promote closer collaboration between the police and other security services in pursuit of national safety goals and the success of the federal government’s Renewed Hope initiative.
While the corps’ leadership is currently reviewing possible disciplinary steps regarding the officer’s conduct, the Commandant General reaffirmed his commitment to deepening cooperation with the Nigeria Police. He underscored the shared mission of eliminating crime and enhancing public safety across the country.
“I have spoken to the IGP on the matter and sincerely apologise for the embarrassment that the petition might have caused,” NSCDC Commandant General Audi stated.
