Supporters of Peter Obi, under the banner of the “Obedient” movement, have called on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race and instead support Obi in securing the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket.

The appeal was made on Saturday in Umuahia during a large rally organized in honour of Obi’s 64th birthday.

The event, named the One Million Man-March for Obi, took place simultaneously in Umuahia, Aba, Ohafia, and Uzuakoli.

Speaking to reporters in Umuahia, Chibuzor Obiesili, chairman of the rally’s organizing committee in Abia State and one of the state coordinators of the Obedient movement, urged Atiku to step aside and back Obi’s bid.

He argued that Obi is capable of addressing Nigeria’s challenges if given the opportunity to lead.

Obiesili praised Atiku and other opposition figures for their role in forming a political coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu, but stressed that handing the presidential ticket to Obi, a candidate with broad national appeal, could be the key to defeating the ruling APC.

He said, “We thank those behind the formation of the coalition. We appeal that the coalition should consider Obi as its presidential ticket because he has the national appeal needed to uproot the ruling APC.

“We plead with Atiku to please step aside for Obi. Atiku has tried his best for Nigeria, but his greatest sacrifice and gift to Nigeria will be to support Obi get the ADC presidential ticket in 2027 so that Nigeria can move forward.”

On the birthday celebration, Obiesili noted that the rally was a voluntary effort by supporters to honour Obi, describing him as a committed voice for the underprivileged.
