Mixed reactions have arisen across states in response to the wave of defections by governors and lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), with stakeholders sharply divided on whether Nigeria is moving toward a one-party state.
On May 29, 2023, upon the swearing-in of governors elected during the general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) controlled 11 states, solidifying its role as the primary opposition party in the country at that time.
Nonetheless, that structure has been considerably weakened by a number of defections to the APC.
The latest departures have left the PDP with just four serving governors: Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara).
Sunday Vanguard reliably gathered that, given the current situation, one of the governors might defect to any viable faction before the general elections.
“One of the remaining governors would soon dump the party for a viable platform. He needs a new platform to survive, ” a source said.
The significant decrease from 11 to four governors has heightened worries among political analysts regarding the diminishing power of the opposition and the larger consequences for Nigeria’s multiparty democracy, amid ongoing discussions about whether the nation is moving toward a dominant-party system.
Regarding this issue, Comrade Oginni Sunday, who is the National Secretary of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Ogun State, commented:
“It is highly unfortunate that the politics of ideologies is no longer in vogue, due to recklessness and wanton corruption of today’s political leaders.“
