Ohanaeze: Rivers must produce next President-General in 2025 – Isiguzoro

The world’s preeminent Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has decided that Rivers State will produce the organization’s next president-general in 2025.

Ohanaeze also reaffirmed its commitment to respecting and upholding the body’s rotating presidency as stipulated in the constitution.

The factional Secretary-general of Ohanaeze, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, stressed in a press release on Monday that while previous administrations from different Igbo-speaking states had served their respective terms, the time had come for Rivers State to assume the mantle of Ohanaeze leadership.

The statement reads, “As we approach the forthcoming election for the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, it is imperative to honour and uphold the constitutional mandate that designates the last state alphabetically, Rivers State, as the next in line to produce the President General.

“Just as past administrations from various Igbo-speaking states have had their respective tenures, the time has come for Rivers State to take its place at the helm of Ohanaeze leadership.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo, unequivocally states that the provisions of the Ohanaeze constitution regarding the rotation of the presidency are non-negotiable.

“Preparations and discussions are already underway across the Igbo-speaking states in anticipation of this historic transition, which promises not only an end to speculation but also a cultural renaissance with far-reaching effects on the younger generation in Rivers State.

“The significance of having a President General hailing from Rivers State extends beyond mere symbolism; it holds the promise of unifying diverse Igbo communities in Rivers State and clarifying long-standing questions regarding their identity.

“Drawing from the example of the esteemed Ambassador Ralph Uwechue, whose leadership catalyzed unity and confidence among the Anioma people of Delta State, the impact of a Rivers State President General cannot be understated.

“In light of the high expectations and hopes vested in this upcoming presidency, OHANAEZE NDIGBO is resolute in ensuring that the process remains untarnished by self-serving interests or attempts at circumventing the constitutional framework.

“Thus, the Ime-Obi Ohanaeze Ndigbo, under the guidance of Prince Richard Ozobu in honour of our esteemed Ohanaeze leaders of Rivers State such as Senator Obi Wali, Francis Ellah, Chief Aguma and Eze C.C Nwuche, will convene consultative meetings to engage with stakeholders from Rivers State, fostering transparency and inclusivity in the selection process.

“To those who harbor ambitions of extending their tenures illicitly or manipulating the system for personal gain, OHANAEZE NDIGBO sends a clear message: any attempts to subvert the constitution or exploit the organization for ulterior motives will be met with staunch resistance.

“The legacy of Ohanaeze as a unifying force for the Igbo people must be preserved and protected at all costs.”
