The Omoluabi Progressives has sounded the alarm over what it described as a deliberate and orchestrated plot to endanger the life of Rauf Aregbesola, the former Interior Minister and ex-Governor of Osun State.

In a statement signed by the group’s spokesperson and organising secretary, Oluwaseun Abosede, the organisation expressed concern over a growing trend of both political and physical intimidation targeting Aregbesola.

The group accused certain individuals and institutions of using provocative language, indirect threats, and government-backed actions to support what it believes to be a broader scheme aimed at eliminating Aregbesola.

“Taken together, these developments raise genuine fears that a sinister agenda is being orchestrated to silence him permanently under the guise of politics,” the statement read.

According to the group, “Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Igboho, made a declaration at a rally on July 23, 2025, interpreted as a call for violence. He reportedly stated in Yoruba, ‘Ilẹ o mú wọn’ meaning ‘the land will consume them’, a phrase the group said was directed at Aregbesola.”

The group further referenced a social media comment posted on August 2, 2025, by journalist Mayor Akinpelu, who wrote that “no man could repay good with evil and get away with it.” The post, they noted, gained further attention when shared by Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, adding to the tension surrounding Aregbesola’s safety.

They also pointed to another disturbing event on August 14, 2025, when journalist Gbonka Ebiri allegedly referred to Aregbesola as a traitor and demanded that he “face the wrath of Yorubaland,” a statement the group viewed as inciting.

On the same date, the group claimed that a rally organized by the African Democratic Congress in Sagamu, Ogun State, where Aregbesola was expected to speak in support of Hon. Solomon Oluwaseyi Osho’s House of Representatives campaign, was disrupted by security agents. According to their account, an Armoured Personnel Carrier was deployed, the venue was damaged, sound equipment confiscated, and Aregbesola was blocked from attending.

The group said the police’s attempts to downplay the incident only heightened suspicions of political interference.

Omoluabi Progressives described the series of hostile actions and statements as part of what it called “assassination politics,” urging swift intervention to protect the former governor.

The group expressed solidarity with the Coalition of Oodua Self-Determination Groups, which, through its chairman Dayo Ogunlana, condemned the threats and warned that “Yoruba politics must not descend into intimidation and violence.”

While defending Aregbesola’s political independence, the group highlighted his peace efforts with the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) and his contributions to infrastructure and development in both Osun and Lagos States.

They insisted that Aregbesola had committed no wrongdoing by pursuing his own political course and emphasized that his constitutional freedoms must be upheld.

Finally, the group warned that any effort to harm him would be met with resistance and urged the Nigerian public to take note of inflammatory comments by political appointees and allies of President Bola Tinubu. They called on security agencies to act firmly and without bias.

“The safety, dignity, and political rights of Yoruba leaders must not be sacrificed on the altar of opportunism.

“Any further escalation of threats could endanger Aregbesola and undermine peace in Yorubaland,” it concluded.
