The governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has been urged by the All Progressives Congress, or APC, in Osun State, to refrain from calling the state’s APC chapter the aggressor in the ongoing political standoff.
This comes after the Osun APC reported that ten people had been killed in attacks throughout the state by thugs from the Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP.
According to ZINGTIE, Governor Makinde was in the state on Sunday to observe his Osun State counterpart swear in local government council chairmen and their deputies.
Governor Makinde cautioned the Osun APC during the occasion to prevent a recurrence of the past and to prevent the state from becoming a “Wild Wild West.”
Additionally, he urged the state APC to take the case to court rather than relying on self-help.
In order to avoid violent altercations, Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke, who was also addressing at the occasion, instructed the recently sworn-in council officials not to report to the council secretariats.
Governor Makinde’s counsel was deemed superfluous by the Osun APC, which said in a statement signed by Kola Olabisi, the party’s director of media and information, that all available evidence showed the Oyo State governor was only attempting to appease his fellow party governor.
The statement read: “If we may ask, where was Governor Makinde when his political soulmate in the erstwhile State of the Virtuous used the sanctity of the Osun State Government House to incite members of his party to go all out and attack our members and chieftains?
“Where was Governor Makinde when the political hoodlums of his party shot and killed the newly reinstated chairman of our party in Ikire, Hon. Remi Abass, Irewole Local Government Council Area, apparently emboldened by the earlier incitement of Governor Adeleke?
“Where was Governor Makinde when thugs loyal to the PDP killed one person in Irojo, Ilesa, Osun State, during the illegal and shambolic local government council election purportedly held by his brother on Saturday?”
The party asked Governor Makinde to clarify why he said nothing when infamous thugs purportedly associated with his party almost killed APC chieftain Remi Omowaiye and Tobi Famurewa in Ilesa a few days ago.
“We want to make it clear to Governor Makinde that he is not in a position to lecture the leadership of the APC on how to manage the ongoing efforts of our duly elected chairmen and councillors to reap the benefits of the Court of Appeal judgement, Akure Division, delivered on 10 February 2025.
“Where was Governor Makinde when the embattled Governor Adeleke ignored the advice of the nation’s chief law officer, the Attorney-General of the Federation, to cancel the so-called election—an election he claimed to have reviewed and analysed in light of the Court of Appeal judgement, which did not warrant any new election in Osun State until the tenure of the reinstated APC council chairmen and councillors had ended?
“Why did Governor Makinde remain silent when his Osun State counterpart hurled insults at the state Commissioner of Police, the State Director of the DSS, and the State Comptroller of the Civil Defence, despite their efforts to maintain peace in the state?”
The Osun APC further charged that the governor disregarded Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun’s advise, which cautioned against holding the local government elections because of a negative security report, considering the state’s overall interest.
