The president has being encouraged to declare a state of emergency in Osun State by the All Progressives Congress, APC.
In a statement signed by Media and Information Director Kola Olabisi, the party attributed the appeal to a complete breakdown of grassroots governance.
The party asserted that local governments are no longer operational as a result of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration.
The group that likened Adeleke’s leadership to that of Siminalayi Fubara, the suspended governor of Rivers State, stated,“There is no infraction that Fubara was accused of that Adeleke is not guilty of.”
The party further claimed that the governor’s siblings are unduly influencing Osun State’s governance, which is being conducted through a proxy.
“The governor’s family has hijacked the administration, making decisions that should be left to elected officials.”
In 2023, the Osun State chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, or JUSUN, closed state-owned courts for months after the Osun APC accused Governor Adeleke of trying to remove the state’s chief judge through illegitimate means.
“Even in the midst of political turmoil, Rivers State did not experience such a blatant disregard for judicial independence,” the statement added.
Adeleke’s removal of several traditional rulers was criticized by the party as a political witch hunt masquerading as governance because they were selected by his predecessor, former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola.
Additionally, the party condemned Governor Adeleke’s purported noncompliance with a Court of Appeal ruling from February 10, 2025, which reinstated the APC-backed local government chairmen and council members.
According to the statement, “Instead of upholding the court ruling, the governor has chosen to ignore it entirely. His words and actions emboldened his supporters to take the law into their own hands,” APC stated.
“The bloodshed that accompanied 2022 governorship and 2023 general elections remains fresh in the minds of Osun people,” the statement noted.
The APC also denounced the billions of Naira spent on the local government election run by the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, OSSIEC, and accused the governor of firing thousands of staff from the previous administration, including teachers and health care providers.
“For three years, he has deprived these people of their livelihoods without remorse.
“The just concluded local government election was a wasteful exercise that ignored the directives of the federal government.”
The party further claimed that Adeleke had crippled the third tier of government by keeping local government employees from carrying out their jobs, which resulted in the purported collapse of local government administration and caused hardship for the people.
“He has turned his Ede residence into the new power centre, sidelining legally reinstated officials.
“Students, job seekers, and those needing identification letters cannot access essential local government services.”
While claiming that the government’s actions have paralyzed local governance and justifying the imposition of an immediate state of emergency, the Osun APC accused Adeleke of using state resources to sponsor opposition to reinstated APC council officials, characterizing the situation as a direct attack on democracy.
“There is no functional local government structure under this administration. Osun State has never had it this bad. Emergency rule is the only way to restore governance,” the statement asserted.
In a previous statement, the Osun State Government denounced the demand for emergency rule in the state.
Citing Governor Ademola Adeleke’s alleged disregard for an Appeal Court ruling that reinstated APC-affiliated local government chairpersons, APC National Secretary Senator Basiru urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider a similar measure in Osun after Tinubu recently imposed a state of emergency in Rivers State on Tuesday.
Kolapo Alimi, the state commissioner for information and public enlightenment, quickly responded by denouncing Basiru’s proposal as illegal and heartless.
Alimi claimed that the circumstances in Osun and Rivers were essentially different and charged that the APC was trying to undermine the state in order to further its political objectives.
Alimi further said that the APC sought power through undemocratic ways since they lacked the political backing to go against Governor Adeleke in elections.
Alimi cited recent instances in which APC members sought to reinstall their local government officials by enforcing fictitious court orders, saying the activities almost brought the state to anarchy.
