Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has received an appeal from the parents of a youngster who was given a death sentence by the Osun High Court for stealing eggs and a fowl.

At the age of 17, Segun Olowookere was found guilty and is currently being held at Lagos State’s Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison, where he awaits the hangman’s noose.

According to reports, an Osun State High Court in Ikirun, Osun State, sentenced him to death.

Segun was charged with stealing from an Oyan poultry farm in the Odo-Otin Local Government Area.

Since he is their only son, his parents have voiced their sorrow and begged for his life to be spared.

His parents are pleading for clemency from Governor Adeleke.

In order to get his help, they also contacted Adewale Egbedun, the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly.

Folashade Olowookere, Segun’s mother, has been especially distressed.

She begged the governor to give her son another chance by using his amnesty power.

She said that, considering the low value of the objects involved, the punishment’s weight greatly surpassed the offence.

“I want to plead with our amiable governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke to please use his office to release my son.

“We have sold our property to secure his release since he was convicted in 2014. He is a brilliant boy who has a brighter future ahead of him. We must not allow him to waste the peak of his life within the four walls of the prison.

“The Speaker of the House of Assembly is from our town, we also plead for his intervention in this case.

“Also, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice should also help us. Segun has a promising future and can be useful to society,” the mother pleaded.

Segun was never involved in the crime, according to Segun’s father, Olanrewaju Olowookere, who also begged for his son to be spared.

The father said the arrest was a set-up and that his son had been caught while playing with some of his friends in his shop.

He said, “At this point, all we need is the assistance of His Excellency, Governor Ademola Adeleke to grant amnesty to our son.

“We have been in grief since he was sentenced. We have not experienced any kind of happiness. Nobody will be happy seeing his only son in jail,” he said.
