Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged President Bola Tinubu to either step down from office or reconsider any intention of contesting the 2027 presidential election, blaming the current administration for the worsening security situation across Nigeria.
Obi made the call in a statement issued on Monday, where he lamented the continued detention of schoolchildren abducted in Oyo State, noting that they have remained in captivity for more than 50 days.
Speaking after paying a visit to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, the former presidential candidate argued that the inability to secure the release of the pupils after several weeks reflects serious shortcomings in leadership and governance.
Obi disclosed that he was shocked to discover that President Tinubu had allegedly not reached out to Governor Makinde regarding the kidnapping incident.
He recalled that former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan consistently communicated with state governors whenever major security challenges arose in their respective states.
“The ultimate cost of uncompassionate leadership, as evident in the country today, is turning citizens’ frustration into deep, volatile resentment.
“It is even more traumatising when the leader presiding over that collapse demonstrates clear incapacity and a lack of compassion.
“The government and people of Oyo State, more than 50 days after the abduction of the schoolchildren without any tangible effort toward their rescue, should rightly feel bitter and abandoned.” Obi said.
Referencing the 2014 abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls, Obi observed that Tinubu was among those who openly condemned former President Goodluck Jonathan over the handling of the tragedy. He noted that despite several similar incidents occurring under the current administration, there has been little sign of direct presidential intervention.
The former Anambra State governor maintained that the persistent wave of kidnappings and insecurity across the country points to what he described as a lack of both capacity and compassion by the Federal Government.
He concluded by insisting that, in the best interest of the nation, President Tinubu should either resign from office or abandon any plan to seek another term in the 2027 presidential election.
