Polytechnic staff stage protest over 6 months of unpaid salaries

Staff of the former Institute of Technology and Management (ITM) in Ugep, Cross River State, have taken to the streets to protest six months of unpaid salaries. The workers claim they haven’t received payment since January 2025, following the Cross River State Government’s handover of ITM to the newly established Federal Polytechnic, Ugep.

“We need our payment. We have to feed our families. Please beg the government for us, we need money; our families need to survive,” said Emilia Oden, one of the protesters

The protesting workers traveled over 100 kilometers to the Governor’s Office in Calabar, singing solidarity songs and holding placards that read messages like “Government, we want our payment!” Despite promises to absorb the staff into the federal system, the workers are still awaiting clarity on their future employment and payment of their salaries.

Some union leaders were allowed into the complex to await a meeting with Governor Bassey Otu, while others remained outside under tight security. The Paramount Ruler of Ugep, Obol Ofem, had earlier expressed concern and promised to raise the issue with the governor. As of now, the state government has not issued an official response
