Pomona College in Claremont, California, has received an $8.6 million bequest from the estate of Marjorie E. Belknap (’47) to support scholarships for students worldwide.
The gift, announced this week, will provide financial awards to eligible students and expand access to education for future generations. Belknap, who passed away at the age of 98, enrolled at Pomona during World War II as a biology major with a pre-medical focus. She later became the only woman in her class to graduate from Stanford University School of Medicine and went on to establish one of the first female-led medical practices in Marin County, California, in 1956
Pomona College hailed the gift as a tribute to both her pioneering career and her dedication to education. “As Dr. Belknap’s success illustrates, the college has long provided a solid foundation for students to succeed in becoming physicians through its liberal arts education, access to science research experience, and supportive faculty,” said Katrina Keil, director of prehealth advising at Pomona College.
Keil added, “We’re privileged to support students who are pursuing healthcare careers, and we carry Dr. Belknap’s legacy as an inspiration.
