Well-known gospel musician Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, popularly known as New Jerusalem, has passed away at the age of 53.

His death has triggered a wave of grief throughout Benue State, especially among members of the Christian faith, where he was deeply respected for turning Tiv Swange music into a tool for preaching the gospel.

Former Benue State Governor, Chief Samuel Ortom, paid tribute to the late artist during a condolence visit to his home in Makurdi. Accompanied by members of the Brethren Prayer Group, Ortom praised Ikyereve for his unwavering faith and noted that his music touched lives well beyond Nigeria.

“His songs touched my heart as a lover of Christ,” Ortom said. “That attraction led me to seek a personal relationship with him, which began a lasting bond with his family.”

He shared a personal story about hearing Ikyereve’s music during a program in Australia, where a Tiv instructor used his gospel tracks while teaching, describing it as proof of the artist’s international influence.

Ortom extended his prayers to the grieving family and assured them of his ongoing support, including to the New Jerusalem Gospel Music Troupe, emphasizing that his involvement would not end after the funeral.

Speaking for the family, Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve, the elder brother of the late singer, thanked Ortom for the consistent care he showed both during the artist’s illness and after his passing.

He also revealed that one of Israel’s children was named “Ortom” as a tribute to the former governor’s generosity and support during challenging times.

Prayers during the visit were led by Rev. Pastor Tor Ujah and Dr. Joseph Antyo, both senior members of the Brethren Prayer Group.

Israel Ikyereve is survived by his wife, fellow gospel singer Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, along with their four children and extended family members.

His funeral is scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 5, 2025, in Sati Agirigi, Mbamo, Shitile, located in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.
