Prison officer dismissed for exposing colleague who allegedly sneaked out an inmate

One of the officials at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Afikpo was fired by the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) for reportedly sharing “unauthorised” photos of an inmate.

ZINGTIE learnt that the Assistant Superintendent of Corrections Efe Onakpoya, who was assigned to the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, was fired by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board due to allegations of leaking.

The report claims that Onakpoya was fired after disclosing that Ogbule Samuel Obinna, a coworker, had unlawfully taken an inmate out of the prison for a conjugal visit with his girlfriend.

But according to a statement from Umar Abubakar, the spokesperson for the Correctional Service, which SaharaReporters was able to receive on Sunday, the Nigerian Correctional Service carried out an inquiry.

The accusations against Ogbule Samuel Obinna were deemed false, according to the authorities.

“The internal review, which included a rigorous assessment of all relevant facts and testimonies, concluded that there was no credible evidence linking the officer to any misconduct.”

“The officer in question, ASC I Efe Onakpoya (Service No. 57790), was relieved of his duties following proven misconduct, not only for taking unauthorised photographs of an inmate, Ibuchi Okoro Eze, but also for uploading sensitive materials online and spreading false, damaging allegations against the Service”

“If anything, the action taken by the Service, a swift dismissal following due process underscores NCoS’s zero-tolerance policy for ethical breaches and its unwavering commitment to discipline and integrity.”
