Protect our campuses: NAPS sounds alarm over rising Insecurity in Tertiary Institutions

The North Central chapter of the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has expressed concern over the recurring insecurity in tertiary institutions in the region. The association is calling on the federal and state governments to take immediate action to ensure that polytechnics and other higher institutions are adequately protected from all forms of criminal invasions.

NAPS Coordinator in the North Central, Ekom Peter-Ayaka, made the call in Lafia, Nasarawa State, while presenting an award of integrity and excellence to Dr. Isah Yahaya, a former Medical Director of the Comprehensive Primary Healthcare Centre. Peter-Ayaka noted that the security situation, if not addressed, could discourage students from continuing with their studies.

“The security challenges on campuses of tertiary institutions are uncalled for,” Peter-Ayaka said. “We have been witnessing issues of insecurity on our various campuses, and NAPS has been working closely with students and security agencies to tackle the issue. However, we will be grateful if the federal and state governments join hands with us to ensure that our campuses are adequately protected.”

Peter-Ayaka commended President Bola Tinubu for introducing the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, which has enabled many polytechnic students to access loans to continue their education. “NELFund opened the doors for students from diverse backgrounds to access higher education,” he said. “The affordable loans have helped students cover tuition, living expenses, and other educational costs, allowing them to concentrate on their studies and achieve better outcomes.”

The NAPS coordinator also praised Dr. Yahaya, the awardee, for his outstanding leadership qualities, transparency, and dedication to public service and the health sector in the state. He urged Nigerians to emulate Dr. Yahaya’s example by reaching out to the underprivileged in society. “We are happy that Dr. Isah Yahaya received the award cheerfully,” Peter-Ayaka added. “He has done so much for students and other people in the North Central zone with his limited resources and pledged to do more for the less privileged in society.
