Protest: Nigerian Defence finally responds to call for coup, flying of Russian flag

On Monday, the Nigerian Defence issued a strong warning to the populace advocating for military control over the nation.

Following an emergency meeting with President Bola Tinubu, General Christopher Mustapha, the Chief of Defence Staff, issued a warning to journalists. He further stated that individuals flying the Russian flag in Nigeria have committed treasonable offences.

According to ZINGTIE, some EndBadGovernance demonstrators were heard shouting for the military to overthrow the government in a coup, while others were seen flying the Russian flag in various northern states.

General Christopher promised that those who were protesting hunger and the high expense of living will face consequences from the law in response to the actions of angry Nigerians.

Addressing the demand for a coup specifically, Musa warned those behind it to stop saying that the military had come to terms with democracy and that regime change would never be permitted in Nigeria.

“All of us have seen it where foreign flags have been flown within the sovereignty of Nigeria, and that is totally unacceptable. We are warning in clear terms and the President has also said we should convey this, that we will not accept anybody, any individual flying any foreign flag in Nigeria.

“That is a treasonable offence, and it will be viewed and treated as such. So nobody shall allow himself to be used by any individual.

“Also the issue of coups, Nigeria is a sovereign nation, Nigeria is a democratic nation all security agencies are here to defend democracy and ensure that democracy continues to strive.

“We will not accept anyone pushing or taking any action, seemingly or for whatever reason, to want to push for any change of government. Democracy is what we stand for, democracy is what will continue to defend”, he said.
