The Nigerian government, under the coordination of the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF), has acknowledged 18 outstanding civil servants for their remarkable contributions.

This recognition formed part of the activities marking the 2025 Federal Civil Service Week, with the honourees receiving their awards at the State House Banquet Hall, located within the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

These recipients were selected for their unwavering dedication, innovative practices, and ethical conduct, all of which have significantly impacted the country’s public service landscape.

The most prestigious accolade the Presidential Distinguished Civil Service Career Award—was conferred upon Engr. (Dr.) Bahijjahtu Hadiza Abubakar, who serves as Director of Pollution Control & Environmental Health at the Federal Ministry of Environment.

Similarly, Dr Oluwabamidele Ibrahim Kobe, an Assistant Chief Administrative Officer with the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, received the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation EPIC Award. His recognition was based on his exemplary dedication to administrative efficiency and forward-thinking policy initiatives.

Other honourees were acknowledged across various categories such as Digital Transformation, Citizen-Focused Service Delivery, and Innovation in Public Sector Leadership—highlighting the administration’s emphasis on promoting a results-oriented and merit-based public service.

Delivering the keynote address, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, OON, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, described the awardees as true “quiet achievers” who are instrumental in Nigeria’s development.

“Today, we celebrate not just titles, but impact, not positions, but purpose,” she declared.

“These honourees have demonstrated that excellence is not an accident, but a choice, one built on discipline, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to serving the Nigerian people”, she said.

Mrs. Walson-Jack also underlined the importance of time management, transparency, and ethical behaviour in ensuring meaningful reform, stressing that punctuality remains central to instilling a culture of excellence within the civil service.

“Punctuality and regular attendance are not merely procedural requirements; they are foundational to the culture of excellence we must restore and uphold in the Nigerian Civil Service. Reporting to duty by 8:00 a.m. is an expression of respect for the institution, our colleagues, and the citizens we serve. In the future, we must embrace these values as hallmarks of reform and professionalism across the Service”, she said.

She further described the event as an opportunity for reflection and renewed dedication to public service ideals, urging civil servants to continually strive for higher performance, ethical standards, and national loyalty in their duties.

According to her, true transformation occurs through the consistent efforts of diligent workers who embody integrity and commitment. She assured those not recognised that their efforts are seen and valued, encouraging every public servant to keep pursuing excellence and serve the country with sincerity.

The ceremony, which attracted notable attendees such as Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu), and Hon. Sani Bala, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Sector Matters, reinforced the federal government’s aim of cultivating a technology-driven, accountable, and citizen-oriented civil service.
