General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), has highlighted the critical role that restoring Lake Chad plays in advancing counterterrorism operations in Nigeria’s North East.
During a strategic visit to assess the progress of Operation Hadin Kai at the 7 Division, Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri, General Musa explained that revitalizing the lake would significantly enhance naval capabilities and aid in dismantling terrorist strongholds in the surrounding region.
“We are looking forward to holding another meeting focused on clearing all obstacles in Lake Chad and recharging it. This is very important to our ongoing efforts against insecurity,” he stated.
He pointed out that Lake Chad holds both security and economic value, serving as a vital resource for over 50 million people spread across Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon. In addition to improving regional stability, the lake’s restoration could generate employment opportunities for as many as 20 million youths.
General Musa made these remarks in the context of renewed assaults by Boko Haram and ISWAP on military posts and local communities in Borno and Yobe states. He referred to the resurgence of attacks as a “temporary setback,” attributing it to intensified counterinsurgency efforts in the Sahel region that have forced insurgents to shift their activities toward the more vulnerable Lake Chad border areas.
“What we are witnessing is an eclipse a reaction to pressure on terrorist groups in the Sahel,” he said. “We are working diligently to address these challenges.”
He assured citizens that the military, working alongside other security organizations, is formulating updated tactics and utilizing modern weaponry to strengthen the fight against terrorism.
“I was in Borno three weeks ago with the ministers of defence and other service chiefs to assess the security situation. I returned now to reassess and consult with stakeholders. These recent attacks should not cause alarm; we are fully in control,” he said.
General Musa called on all citizens to support the military’s efforts, stressing that national security requires collective commitment. “Security is a shared responsibility. Every Nigerian has a role to play in ensuring peace,” he added.
