Rector advises Fresh Students to shun Cultism, stay focused on Academic Goals

The Rector of West African Polytechnic, Ijoko, Ogun State, Dr. Lamidi Ajayi, has cautioned newly admitted students to avoid abusing their freedom and instead remain focused on their academic goals. Ajayi made this call during the matriculation ceremony, urging the students to steer clear of vices such as drug abuse, cultism, and examination malpractices.

“Having come this far indicates that you are ready to give it all it takes to achieve greater academic success, and that journey begins today,” Ajayi said. “I appeal to you to plan your time effectively. Do not think that you are here to enjoy freedom because excessive freedom leads nowhere.

The Rector stressed the importance of effective time management, urging the students to shun distractions and remain committed to their studies. “You must take time management seriously. You are here to learn, and you must avoid anything that may hinder you from achieving this lofty goal,” he advised.

While congratulating the students for scaling the institution’s admission process, Ajayi reminded them of the hard work ahead and assured them that the school’s management and staff remain committed to equipping them with the necessary knowledge and skills for future success.

Oba Abdulwasiu Ogungbayi, the Onitetiku of Owode, Ota, who attended the ceremony, called on the government to increase budgetary allocations to education in the 2026 budget. “Improved funding would enable Nigerian tertiary institutions to compete favourably with their counterparts globally,” he said.
