Rector warns against bullying and social vices; Advises parents on career choices

The Acting Rector of First City Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Owoeye Michael, has cautioned newly admitted students against engaging in social vices such as drugs, cultism, sexual misconduct, and bullying. He emphasised that the institution maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards such misconduct and will impose strict sanctions on any student found guilty.

During the polytechnic’s maiden matriculation ceremony for the 2024/2025 academic year, Owoeye advised parents not to impose their own preferences regarding career choices on their children but rather to provide guidance and allow them to follow their passions.

“At First City Polytechnic, we are steadfast in our zero-tolerance policy against social vices, including cultism, sexual misconduct, drug abuse, bullying, and similar behaviours,” Owoeye said. “Any student found in violation of these principles will face appropriate sanctions.

The acting rector urged students to familiarise themselves with the institution’s rules and regulations, as outlined in the student handbook, and adhere to them diligently. He also encouraged students to take advantage of the polytechnic’s entrepreneurship program to become self-reliant after graduation.

“Your time at First City Polytechnic will be a period of intellectual growth, where you will engage with diverse perspectives, learn from accomplished scholars, and, most importantly, learn from one another,” Owoeye added.

Owoeye also reminded students to behave well, dress appropriately, and build positive relationships with members of the local community. He concluded by advising students to ground themselves in the fundamentals of their chosen field and to use their education for the betterment of society.

“The grass is never greener on the other side; it is greener where you water it,” Owoeye said, emphasizing the importance of hard work and dedication in achieving success.
