President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on the United Nations to undergo comprehensive reforms or risk becoming obsolete in the face of global challenges.

Delivering his remarks through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, Tinubu outlined four major areas in need of urgent reform beginning with Nigeria’s long-standing push for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

“Nigeria must have a permanent seat at the UN Security Council. This should take place as part of a wider process of institutional reform. The United Nations will recover its relevance only when it reflects the world as it is, not as it was,” he stated.

He underscored Nigeria’s evolution from a once-colonized nation of 20 million people excluded from global decision-making to a sovereign state of more than 236 million citizens, projected to become the third most populous country globally, and home to one of the world’s most vibrant and youthful populations.

The president expressed disappointment over the sluggish progress in addressing major global challenges, including the reduction of nuclear arms and the long-delayed reform of the Security Council.

He further advocated for major changes to the international financial structure, calling for innovative solutions to tackle the sovereign debt burdens facing many developing countries.

Tinubu also addressed the ongoing crises in the Middle East and other conflict zones, describing the suffering witnessed there as a mark against humanity’s shared conscience.
