The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) has strongly condemned President Bola Tinubu’s decision to rename the institution after former President Muhammadu Buhari. The union described the move as a “brazen affront” to the university’s history, identity, and academic integrity.
In a press statement, ASUU’s chairperson, Abubakar Mshelia Saidu, stated, “This action is not merely shocking; it represents a brazen affront to the sanctity of our alma mater, especially given its impending historic 50th anniversary under the globally recognized and deeply cherished ‘Unimaid’ brand.
The union warned that the university’s hard-earned legacy would not be sacrificed on the altar of political patronage, and its reaction would be “unequivocal, forceful, and commanding.” ASUU accused the federal government of attempting to hijack the institution’s legacy for political reasons.
The statement continued, “The legacy of Unimaid, painstakingly built for five decades, will not be sacrificed on the altar of political expediency. We urge you to be a part of this historic moment as the date and time of the meeting will be announced in due course; our resolve must be collective.
The University of Maiduguri, founded in 1975, is known for its resilience and academic excellence despite security challenges in the North-East region. The renaming decision has sparked widespread criticism, with many Nigerians opposing the move on social media
