NARD (the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors) has declared intentions to initiate a nationwide strike starting on Tuesday, April 7, as a result of the Federal Government’s assessment of the Professional Allowance Table policy framework and constructive discussions.
This was revealed in a statement on Saturday by the Secretary General, Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, who pointed out that the choice came after thorough discussions among members across the nation and demonstrated a common dedication to enhancing healthcare provision and collaborative initiatives.
He clarified that the resolution was made during an Extraordinary National Executive Council meeting conducted online, where attendees promoted ongoing collaboration with the government to secure outcomes beneficial for both doctors and patients.
The association stated that the strike action will begin at 12 a.m. on Tuesday, involving members from federal, state, and private institutions, while remaining open to dialogue and ongoing efforts for timely resolution.
The association underscored the necessity of reestablishing the Professional Allowance Table, calling it essential for improving welfare, raising morale, and aiding in the retention of skilled medical professionals across the country.
It underscored the necessity of quickly paying promotion and salary arrears owed to resident doctors, conveying hope that current talks would lead to solutions advantageous for both practitioners and the healthcare system.
NARD also urged the prompt release of the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund, highlighting that better funding would augment training opportunities, professional growth, and the overall capacity of Nigeria’s healthcare sector in the future.
The association highlighted the significance of resolving outstanding allowance arrears and expressed confidence that collaboration among stakeholders would alleviate financial pressures and strengthen commitment among resident doctors serving communities across the country.
Leadership emphasized the importance of ongoing involvement to ensure equity, enhance working conditions, and foster a healthcare system that is more robust and responsive on a national level. Members were urged to stay united and focused in light of this.
The association reiterated its dedication to ongoing discussions with authorities and expressed hope that these efforts would produce beneficial results, all while emphasizing its role in promoting the welfare and professional interests of its members.
The Professional Allowance Table aims to standardise doctors’ pay, ensuring payment consistency and aiding better administration within the national healthcare system framework.
