Rivers Assembly crisis: Court declares seats of pro-Wike lawmakers vacant

A Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt has granted an order of interlocutory injunction, preventing Martin Amaewhule and twenty-four other lawmakers from parading and holding themselves as members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The court presided over by Justice C.N. Wali, has also issued an interlocutory injunction against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the State Attorney General of Rivers State, and the Chief Judge of Rivers State, who are the 26th and 28th defendants in the lawsuit.

They are prohibited from addressing, confronting, or accepting any resolution, bill, or other actions from Amaewhule and the twenty-four lawmakers.

In a decision on a lawsuit brought by Victor Oko-Jumbo, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and Orubienimigha Adolphus-Timothy as claimants, Justice Wali barred Amaewhule and the other twenty-four people from using the House of Assembly quarters auditorium or any other location to conduct any legislative business.

According to ZINGTIE, the court also ruled that Amaewhule’s and the other 24 seats remain empty while the substantive suit is heard and decided.

A motion hearing was scheduled on July 1, 2024, and the case was postponed.
