Sim Fubara, the suspended governor of Rivers State, has been warned by Tony Okocha, the chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State, about the potential for him to join the party.
According to Okocha, Fubara must follow the established processes and cannot join the APC through a back door.
Okocha stated Wednesday in the state capital of Port Harcourt that Fubara needs to join the APC at the ward level.
He said, “Just like every other Nigerian, he is at liberty to join any political party. That is the law. But, I say anybody, not restricted to the governor, the suspended governor anyway, anybody who wants to join the APC should enter the party through the door, not through the window.
“You have to go to your ward to enroll because your name as a member of the party cannot be found at the national secretariat except it comes from your ward. That is the proper door, that is the proper process.”
After President Bola Tinubu proclaimed a state of emergency in the state in March, Fubara is currently serving a six-month suspension.
Because of the state’s political instability, Tinubu suspended Fubara, his deputy, and every member of the State House of Assembly.
During his suspension, the President designated a Sole Administrator to lead the state.
A dispute between Fubara and Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, over control of the state’s political resources sparked the crisis soon after Fubara was elected governor.
The bombing of the State House of Assembly and the support for the factionalization of the state legislature were swift outcomes of the crisis.
The situation continued in spite of Tinubu’s efforts to bring about peace, and the president suspended the governor to keep it from escalating into a security catastrophe.
In an attempt to make amends with all pertinent parties in the state, Fubara has visited with Tinubu and Wike since his suspension.
