The Rotary Club of Umuahia, District 9142, has launched a N180m community development project for 2025-2026, aimed at addressing some of the most urgent human needs in rural Nigeria. The project includes a solar-powered water borehole for the Awuja community in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, renovation of the Newborn Incubation Centre at Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, and construction of a six-room toilet facility with a water borehole at Ugba Community Primary School, Umuahia.

The Awuja community has struggled with decades-long infrastructural deprivation, lacking basic amenities such as motorable roads, electricity, healthcare facilities, sanitation systems, and clean water. Residents rely on a stream as their only water source and survive largely on rice farming and palm oil production

Rotarian Ifeoma Kelenna-Obonna, the 45th President of the Club, outlined the flagship projects for her tenure, saying, “With God on our side and the support of all present, we will deliver these projects successfully. This is not my journey alone, it is our shared mission.” She called for financial and material support from individuals and partner organisations to achieve the project’s goals.

The projects are part of Rotary’s tradition of “service above self” and aim to improve health, education, and access to safe water in underserved communities. The Club has a history of engaging with Awuja through joint efforts with its U.S. counterpart, including polio immunisation campaigns, free medical outreach, food and clothing distribution, and festive events.

Outgoing President, Rotarian Temitope Nnaomah, reflected on the club’s achievements over the past year, which included 32 service projects in healthcare, education, environment, and economic empowerment, earning five district awards and recognition as the second-best club in the district
