The Rotary International Foundation has committed approximately $2 million to support maternal and child healthcare in Nigeria. This initiative builds upon the organisation’s efforts to eradicate polio, which led to Nigeria being declared polio-free in 2020. ¹

Victor Onukwugha, Past District Governor and Chairman of the Trustee Chair’s Visit to Nigeria Committee, emphasised the significance of the ongoing efforts. He disclosed that Rotary International Foundation Trustee Chair, Mark D. Maloney, will visit Nigeria to explore opportunities for the country to benefit from the global humanitarian organisation.

According to Onukwugha, the district received $2 million in grants under the Programme of Scale, focusing on improving maternal and child health. He explained that the Rotary Foundation provides four types of grants: District Grants, Global Grants, the Disaster Fund, and the Program of Scale. “_These are the avenues through which the Rotary Foundation continues to make a difference globally_,” he said.

The visit will highlight the initiatives of Nigeria’s six Rotary Districts and advocate for Rotary’s humanitarian work in the country. Onukwugha noted, “Since its establishment, only three countries in the world have benefitted from it, Nigeria being one, and the Nigerian fund, which is about $2 million, is channelled to maternal and child care.

President Bola Tinubu will host Maloney during the visit, which will also include a town hall meeting with Rotarians and non-Rotarians in Abuja. Maloney will witness a symbolic polio immunisation exercise, acknowledging Nigeria’s progress in combating polio.

Onukwugha emphasised Rotary’s global impact, particularly in eradicating polio, and highlighted the organisation’s ongoing partnership with the Nigerian government. “Through donations from Nigerians and people in over 200 countries, Rotary has helped Nigeria transition from being the country with the highest polio cases to being polio-free since 2020.”

Maloney’s visit marks the first time in many years that a Trustee Chair of the Rotary Foundation has visited Nigeria. Onukwugha expressed excitement about the opportunities this presents, noting that Rotary International has grown from a modest beginning of $26.05 to a foundation with an endowment of over $2 billion. “The Foundation has become the engine through which Rotary has been doing good all over the world,” Onukwugha concluded.
