Former Transportation Minister and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has spoken out about why he opposed former President Goodluck, claiming that his position was founded on a disagreement over leadership philosophies rather than personal animosity, according to a Vanguard article published on April 26, 2025.

Amaechi said this on Friday at a political conference in Port Harcourt, “The reason for removing Goodluck was that I didn’t agree with his style,” adding that he thought Jonathan’s administration lacked the decisive and open leadership that Nigeria needed.

In the political reorganizations preceding the general elections in 2015, Amaechi was instrumental.

He was a key player in the creation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and helped organize the opposition forces that eventually overthrew Jonathan and installed Muhammadu Buhari.

Amaechi said, “I took a political risk because I felt Nigeria needed a new direction, It wasn’t about Goodluck Jonathan as a person. I simply believed the country deserved better governance—more accountability, stronger leadership, and less tolera nce for mismanagement.”

His comments rekindle debates on the historic 2015 transition, which was one of Nigeria’s biggest political upheavals since the country’s return to democracy in 1999.

The era saw a peaceful transition of power, but it also widened partisan gaps that still influence public conversation. Amaechi’s comments have elicited a range of responses.

While some political observers condemn his perspective as revisionist, claiming that the 2015 opposition campaign contributed to today’s political fragmentation, others view it as an attempt to regain political significance ahead of 2027.

Amaechi has retreated from active politics in recent years, but his sporadic speeches and public appearances keep him in the public eye, particularly as Nigeria gets closer to another crucial election cycle.
