Russian missile attack wounds 88 in Ukraine

On Monday, a Russian missile strike hit a densely-populated district in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, injuring at least 88 people, including 17 children, as ceasefire discussions continued.

Regional governor Volodymyr Artiukh, who provided the latest casualty update on national television, explained that more children were spared injury because they had been evacuated to air raid shelters.

“To force Russia into peace, strong measures and decisive actions are needed. We are ready to support every strong initiative that makes diplomacy more effective,” he said.

Reports indicated that several high-rise residential buildings in the city center were also damaged.

Earlier, Artiukh shared a video filmed at the scene, showing thick black smoke, fires, and a car with shattered windows in the background.

In his nightly video address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, describing it as another example of loss, pain, and destruction—things Ukraine never sought.

This assault occurred as Russian and US officials convened in Saudi Arabia to discuss the possibility of a ceasefire.

Zelenskyy emphasized that Russia was the sole force extending the conflict and causing suffering for both their people and the entire world.
