Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that there has been no necessity to resort to nuclear weapons in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, expressing optimism that such a scenario will not become necessary.
He made the remarks during a televised appearance on Sunday.
In a segment of a forthcoming interview with Russian state media released on Telegram, Putin emphasized that Russia possesses both the capacity and resources to see the conflict in Ukraine through to what he described as a logical end.
When asked by a state media journalist about Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory, Putin replied that nuclear arms had not been required, underscoring his hope they would remain unused.
“We have enough strength and means to bring what was started in 2022 to a logical conclusion with the outcome Russia requires,” he said.
Putin launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, deploying tens of thousands of soldiers in what Moscow terms a “special military operation” against the neighboring country.
Although Ukrainian forces successfully defended Kyiv, Russian troops still hold approximately 20% of Ukraine’s territory, including significant areas in the south and east.
Recently, the Russian president has shown openness to negotiating a peace deal. This comes as former U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated his desire to broker an end to the war through diplomacy.
Concerns over a possible nuclear escalation have reportedly influenced American policy decisions since the war’s inception. Former CIA Director William Burns has previously stated that there was a credible threat in late 2022 that Russia might deploy nuclear weapons during the conflict.
