Sadness as Cooking Gas Records Sharp Increase Nationwide

The price of liquefied petroleum gas, popularly known as cooking gas, has increased nationwide as marketers lament growing scarcity.

This comes as the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers disclosed that the price of cooking gas has risen to ₦1,500 per kilogram from ₦1,200 in Abuja.

NALPGAM President, Edu Inyang, and the Executive Secretary, Bassey Essien, disclosed this in a joint statement issued at the weekend.

This indicates that the price of cooking gas increased by ₦300 per litre, representing a 25 percent rise.

The implication is that Nigerians already battling high living costs will now pay an additional ₦300 or more to purchase cooking gas depending on the location across the country.

“The citizens of Nigeria have woken up to buy cooking gas, which should be a social item, at a prohibitive cost of over N1,500 per kg,” NALPGAM stated.

The marketers expressed concern that the latest increase could trigger public anger against operators of gas filling stations if urgent action is not taken by the Federal Government.

“We feel that if the situation is not immediately checked, the citizens may rise against the owners of gas filling stations,” the marketers added.
