Students of Rivers State University (RSU) are living in fear due to a series of unsettling incidents in the hostels. Hostels A and C have been particularly affected, with students reporting recurring problems of theft and attacks.

A female student, Chiamaka Chigekwu, recounted a terrifying incident where a man emerged from the gutter connected to the hostel and attacked her friend, stealing her phone and assaulting her. “Her cries for help went unanswered, as other students could not help her, fearing that the attacker was armed,” Chigekwu said.

Displeased by the lack of commitment from the management, the students printed a poster with the caption: “Enough Is Enough! Hostel C Is No Longer Safe”, “We are tired of theft, fear and insecurity”, “While students are losing phones, laptops and peace of mind, security is busy checking dressing instead of catching criminals.”

The students demanded that the management secure the hostel, investigate the thefts, protect lives and property, and focus on crime prevention rather than “fashion policing”. “Secure the hostel, investigate the thefts, and protect lives and property. We demand real security in Hostel C, not fashion policing, but crime prevention,” the poster read

In response, the Registrar, Mrs Ibimonia Harry, said that the management had apprehended two students in connection with the incidents and had taken steps to prevent future occurrences. “Both students have been evicted from the hostels, handed over to their parents, and will be referred to the Students Disciplinary Committee for further action,” she said.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, visited Hostel C and directed that a security post be erected in front of the hostel immediately, additional security operatives be deployed to the vicinity, and protective gadgets be installed around the drainage close to the hostel. “We wish to reassure all parents, staff and students that their safety is guaranteed,” he said.
