Former Senate President Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has been named to chair the PDP’s high-level Reconciliation and Strategy Committee as part of fresh attempts to realign the party in front of the general elections in 2027.
The committee’s duties include mending internal divisions, bringing the party back together, and developing a progressive agenda for Nigeria’s largest opposition party.
In a tweet sent on Friday through his verified X account (@bukolasaraki), Saraki revealed that he and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, together with committee members Senators Seriake Dickson and Ibrahim Dankwambo, had just wrapped up a strategic meeting in Enugu. As part of the committee’s mandate, the session is one of several nationwide consultations being conducted.
“We didn’t sidestep the issues. We confronted the fractures in our foundation, asked the hard questions, and began shaping a real, workable plan to move our party forward,” Saraki wrote, signaling a shift from rhetoric to action within the PDP’s top ranks.
The PDP National Working Committee (NWC) established the Reconciliation and Strategy Committee to resolve enduring party divisions that have undermined the party’s unity since the general elections of 2023. Saraki’s appointment as committee chair confirms his standing as a seasoned party leader and bridge-builder with solid ties across Nigeria’s political spectrum.
According to party insiders, the committee is creating a plan to strategically and ideologically reposition the PDP while also giving priority to discussions with state governors, previous candidates, grassroots members, other resentful stakeholders.
Saraki underlined the importance of reflection and his own faith in the PDP’s core values. “I believe in what the PDP has stood for—and what it can still become, if we’re willing to do the hard, unglamorous work of rebuilding from the inside out.”
The party has the members, the clarity, and the dedication to reestablish itself as a legitimate political force, he continued, even though the road ahead will not be simple.
As the PDP steps up attempts to bring its members back together and reestablish itself as a competitive alternative in Nigeria’s changing political landscape, the Enugu meeting is one of the committee’s first significant gatherings. More regional consultations are anticipated in the upcoming weeks.
