A group of patriotic Nigerians, the Network of Concerned Citizens (NCC), has called on the Federal Government and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to reject demands for the sale of the Port Harcourt refinery. According to the group, selling the refinery would be detrimental to the country’s strategic interests and national energy security.

“Selling the refinery, which is one of Nigeria’s most critical national assets, could spell doom for the country’s strategic interests and leave her vulnerable to exploitation by hawks in the sector,” the NCC stated. The group argued that making the refinery operational would stabilize the price of petroleum products and reduce dependence on private refineries.

The NCC urged the NNPC management to complete the rehabilitation and retention of the plant, rather than selling it. “The first thing to do is to pay the contractors their outstanding dues. Thereafter, they should be mobilised back to site to finish whatever outstanding job,” the group advised.

According to the NCC, selling national assets would only benefit a select few, while harming the country and its people. “Privatisation carried out in the past did not favour the country as it was fraught with irregularities,” the group recalled, citing examples such as the Eleme Petrochemicals Company and components of the former NEPA.

The group emphasized that the Port Harcourt refinery, if fully operational, would provide jobs and generate revenue for the government. “Selling them could result in job losses and a reduction in government income,” the NCC warned.
