According to the federal government, ten individuals on INTERPOL’s watch list were recently arrested by security personnel as they attempted to enter Nigeria.
This was revealed by Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo on Tuesday when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu opened the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Technology Innovation Complex in Abuja.
Ten individuals on the immigration and INTERPOL wanted lists were arrested in the last week, he said, adding that they had the potential to incite violence in the nation. He underlined that Nigeria is off-limits to any criminal groups under the current government.
The facilities that President Tinubu unveiled—such as the Interior Data Center, ECOWAS biometric card production center, NIS Data Center, command and control center, and a 0.5KW solar power plant—have greatly improved the capacity to identify people with dubious personalities.
The minister clarified, “The recently constructed facility will determine the risk level of individuals entering the country, identify anomalous migration patterns, and monitor unmanned borders in difficult-to-reach areas nationwide.”
He emphasized that the government saves more than N300 million a year thanks to the solar power plant, which was built to lower expenses and encourage sustainability. The 0.5KW solar plant, which is fully functioning, powers the facility.
Tunji-Ojo added that 250 cops had received training to guarantee round-the-clock surveillance, working eight-hour shifts.
Although the minister bemoaned the billions of dollars that are wasted every year as a result of inefficiencies, he was certain that the new technology will result in considerable resource savings for the nation. In addition, he announced the establishment of an automated visa regime with 48-hour approval and mentioned the adoption of an ECOWAS travel passport to make cross-border travel easier.
The technologically advanced passenger monitoring system, which allowed for the arrest of ten people of interest within a week after its installation, was commended by President Tinubu. He clarified that the new technology improves video surveillance in border areas, profiles high-risk travelers, tracks suspicious travel patterns, and integrates data with other international agencies.
All pertinent government institutions are connected via the recently opened Bola Ahmed Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex (BATTIC) at the NIS headquarters, making Nigeria one of six African nations with the idea of integrated passenger security systems was originally started eighteen years ago under previous President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
The facility uses technology to propel development, according to the President, who called the project a major success. He promised that Nigeria would adopt a completely new passport system by 2025, acknowledging the passport as an essential security instrument.
The goal of BATTIC is to effectively manage and analyze data using cutting-edge technology, establishing a new standard for border security and national protection, according to NIS Comptroller-General Kemi Nanna Nandap.
