Thabo Ali Molobela, 37, was found guilty of murder and attempted murder by the High Court in Polokwane, South Africa, and given a sentence of 35 years in jail.

Mobobela, who had been on the run after he reportedly shot his wife, their child, and her four family members, killing two of them in Makgophong village, Magatle, was apprehended by Limpopo police in September of last year.

August 19, 2023 was the date of the gruesome shooting.

Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the provincial police spokeswoman for Limpopo, stated on Thursday, November 14, that Molobela was employed as a security guard.

“The accused and his wife had marital issues, which remained unresolved when he then resorted to shooting his wife, their child, sister-in-law, and the wife’s cousin. The accused arrived at his in-laws’ homestead and started to shoot at the victims whilst in a motor vehicle in the yard,” said Ledwaba.

Both the wife’s sister and her cousin died. Despite their injuries, Molobela’s wife, child, and other family members made it through the shootings.

Molobela, who had been evading capture, was apprehended at Santeng hamlet in Hoedspruit about a month later.

Molobela allegedly shot himself in an attempt to end his life while being arrested. After being disarmed by police, he was taken to the nearby hospital.

The investigations were overseen by Magatle detective Captain Kedibone Mathamela until Molobela received a sentence of 35 years in jail.

Molobela received a 25-year prison term for the first count of murder.

Molobela was also given a 25-year prison sentence on the second count of murder. Concurrent execution of the sentences in counts one and two was mandated by the court.

Molobela was sentenced to ten years in jail for each of the four attempted murder charges.

Molobela was given a 12-year prison sentence for pointing with a handgun.

Concurrent execution of the sentences was mandated by the court.

Additionally, Molobela was deemed unfit to own a firearm.

Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the provincial commissioner of police for Limpopo, has praised the court’s heavy sentencing.

Hadebe stated, “We appreciate the wonderful job done by the investigating officer, the arresting team, and all the participants who ensured that justice prevails.”
