Hours after a key US tariff exemption expired, Chinese e-commerce site Temu announced a significant overhaul of its shipping model. The company has shifted to using US-based sellers to handle all American sales, with orders fulfilled from within the country. According to a Temu spokesperson, “All sales in the U.S. are now handled by locally based sellers, with orders fulfilled from within the country. Temu has been actively recruiting U.S. sellers to join the platform.”

This change marks a major departure from Temu’s previous business model, which relied heavily on the de minimis exemption to flood the US market with ultra-low-price goods. The exemption allowed shipments of goods worth $800 or less to enter the US duty-free, often bypassing inspections and paperwork.

A Temu representative did not directly address whether the new model would help the company avoid tariffs imposed by the US government. However, industry experts note that the change may be an attempt to adapt to the new trade environment. As Temu’s spokesperson noted, “Temu has been actively recruiting U.S. sellers to join the platform.

The shift to US-based sellers may not necessarily mean that products are made in the USA. Temu and similar sites have been building up their US warehouse portfolios to reduce shipping times. According to industry insiders, the company may be using existing infrastructure to comply with the new regulations.

When asked about potential product shortages, a Temu representative acknowledged that the company may need to reorder products, offer substitutes, or raise prices if items are out of stock. Some users on social media have already reported issues with stock availability, with one Reddit user noting that 60 items in their cart were suddenly unavailable.

In response to user concerns, Temu says on its website that there are no import charges or extra costs on delivery for items purchased from local warehouses. However, some users have reported additional fees unless “local orders” total at least $30. One user concluded, “Temu is gone! What I saw today completely convinced me! Local sellers, despite obviously buying some items in advance in bulk, don’t have all these items I was interested in.”
