In response to allegations of espionage and complicity in attempts to destabilize the nation, Russia has expelled six British diplomats, the Federal Security Service (FSB) said in a statement on Friday.

According to the FSB, Russia’s internal stability has been compromised and international tensions have been intentionally escalated by the United Kingdom.

“Documents confirming London’s coordination of the escalation of the international military-political situation,” the FSB stated in a statement.

The agency further charged that the Eastern Europe and Central Asia Directorate (EECAD) of the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office was leading “subversive policies” meant to hand Russia a “strategic defeat.”

The FSB observed that the EECAD changed into an intelligence agency hostile to Moscow following the outbreak of the crisis in Ukraine, which resulted to the conclusion that British diplomats operating under its umbrella posed a “security threat.”

Six staff members of the political section of the British Embassy in Moscow had their accreditation removed in retaliation by the Russian Foreign Ministry working with other departments.

Authorities ordered that these ambassadors’ assignments in Russia be terminated early, citing their involvement in activities “showing signs of intelligence and subversive work.”

The FSB’s conclusion was endorsed by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, who told TASS that British officials had engaged in “actions aimed at harming our people.”

The claims have not yet received a response from the British government.

Since the start of the crisis in Ukraine, relations between Russia and the UK have historically declined, with both countries participating in several rounds of diplomatic expulsions and sanctions.

The British Council, a UK cultural group, was also charged by the FSB in February with eavesdropping on military and political information for Ukraine through contacts in the Kherson Region of Russia through refugees living in the UK.
