Afrobeats singer Raoul John Njeng-Njeng, widely known as Skales, has responded to recent calls by Nigerian authorities urging young people to enlist in the military.
In light of a growing decline in youth interest in joining the Nigerian Army, several officials, advocacy groups, and individuals have been appealing to the younger generation to consider military service.
However, Skales questioned the rationale behind such appeals, arguing that the country fails to properly recognize and support those who serve in uniform.
He expressed his views in a post on his X account on Saturday, saying, “Nigeria don’t honor its hero’s and them dey ask you to join soldier … meanwhile soldiers dey suffer lol.”
His comments sparked backlash, with some accusing the artist of trying to dissuade young Nigerians from choosing a career in the military.
An X user @kheeng_diamond wrote, “You don’t want to serve the country and you are also discouraging those that want to? Stop viewing reality from your own perspective alone.”
Reacting, Skales wrote, “lol I’m representing my country with music na … how much dem dey pay soldier again wey dey risk their live for all of us? Go join na.”
