The Benue State House of Assembly has dismissed a viral document circulating on social media, which falsely claimed that legislators were drafting a bill to outlaw romantic relationships in the state.
In a statement issued by Mr. Terver Zamber, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Hyacinth Aondona Dajoh, the Assembly labeled the document as false, deceptive, and the handiwork of mischief-makers.
The fabricated Order Paper allegedly claimed that, beginning January 2026, anyone engaged in a romantic relationship would face legal consequences.
The Assembly firmly stated that no such bill has ever been introduced, backed, or discussed by the 10th Assembly.
“For clarity, every bill before the Benue State House of Assembly must be sponsored by a duly elected Member representing a constituency.
“The so-called bill being circulated has no sponsor and did not originate from any legislator,” the statement noted.
Lawmakers reiterated their focus on enacting legislation that promotes harmony, progress, and unity, while calling on the public to disregard the fake document, which they described as a calculated attempt to discredit the Assembly.
“The 10th Assembly under the leadership of the Speaker remains committed to the welfare of Benue people and will not be derailed by falsehoods,” the statement added.
