Suspected kidnapper arrested as he came for condolence visit to victim’s home in Niger

In the Kontagora Local Government Area of Niger State, a suspected kidnapper went too far and was apprehended after being identified while paying condolences at a victim’s home.

In a statement released on Sunday, Wasiu Abiodun, the state’s police spokeswoman, confirmed the arrest. He said that Nasiru Isyaka, the suspect, and his group had earlier assaulted Sabon-Gari Mangu Matachibu hamlet, killing one person and kidnapping two more.

The statement claims that Isyaka, who is from the same area, was caught after being recognised while paying a condolence visit to one of the rescued victims.

“On January 17th, 2025, at about 10 a.m., officers from ‘A’ Division Kontangora arrested Nasiru Isyaka of Sabon-Gari Mangu Matachibu village,” the statement revealed.

The arrest was connected to a December 29, 2024, kidnapping incident. Armed men invaded the village during the attack, killed one resident and kidnapped two more. Nevertheless, through well-coordinated security measures, the hostages were ultimately freed.

“Preliminary investigations showed that the suspect was recognized and arrested while visiting one of the victims at their home,” Abiodun added.

The suspect has subsequently admitted to the incident, and it has been alleged that a locally manufactured short pistol was found on him.

Isyaka has been taken to the police headquarters in Minna for additional examination and potential legal action. Additionally, efforts are being made to find the other gang members.
