Tambuwal engages security agencies as US airstrikes hit own LG in Sokoto

Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, representing Sokoto South, has urged residents of Sokoto State to be calm following news of US airstrikes targeting ISIS-linked militants on Christmas Day.

In a statement posted on his personal X account, the former Sokoto State governor stated that he was aware of reports about the airstrikes, which marked the first direct US military action in Nigeria based on intelligence about ISWAP threats, and urged citizens to remain law-abiding while authorities clarified the situation.

“I have noted the reports concerning an airstrike carried out as part of ongoing counterterrorism efforts through cooperation between the federal government of Nigeria and the United States, I urge our communities to remain calm and law abiding as relevant authorities clarify the circumstances surrounding the operation” Tambuwal said.

Tambuwal told residents that he was working with relevant security authorities to gather complete details about the operation and ensure that all required precautions were in place to safeguard civilians.

“I wish to assure the people of Sokoto South that I am in active talks with relevant security authorities to obtain full details and ensure that all necessary safeguards are upheld,” he added.

The senator emphasized that counterterrorism activities were solely directed at criminal and terrorist forces harming public safety, rather than innocent individuals who are frequently targets of insecurity. He emphasized that the preservation of civilian life must remain at the heart of all legal security operations.

He also urged community leaders, traditional institutions, and citizens to collaborate closely with security authorities by providing credible intelligence and rejecting misinformation that could instill fear or heighten tensions.
