Tariffs: We’re on right side of history in trade standoff with US – China

On Monday, China asserted that it was on the “right side of history” in its ongoing trade dispute with the United States.

This comes after U.S. President Donald Trump, since returning to office in January, imposed a 10% tariff on most of the U.S.’s trading partners, along with a separate 145% levy on a variety of Chinese products.

In response, China imposed its own tariffs, placing a 125% duty on U.S. goods.

Zhao Chenxin, a senior Chinese economic planner, made the remarks during a news conference in Beijing, where officials outlined additional measures to protect China’s economy from the impact of the trade war. Zhao stated that China firmly believes it is aligned with global truth and morality, arguing,

“We firmly believe that if you are against the world and the truth, you will only isolate yourselves. Only by travelling with the world and with morality can we win the future,” Zhao said.

Zhao also criticized the United States for acting unilaterally, accusing Washington of manipulating the situation and bullying others.

On Sunday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended Trump’s controversial tariff policies, which have caused volatility in global markets. He argued that these policies were designed to create strategic uncertainty, giving the U.S. an advantage.

Many countries now face a deadline of 90 days, expiring in July, to reach agreements with the U.S. or risk facing higher, country-specific tariffs.

Despite the pressure, China has vowed to continue the trade war and has denied claims of holding talks with the U.S. However, Beijing has acknowledged that the global economic challenges have strained its economy, which has long relied on exports.

“External pressures are increasing. The US imposition of successive high-tariff measures has created production and operation challenges for some export-oriented companies and impacted some workers’ jobs,” Yu Jiadong of China’s labour ministry said.
