Teenage teacher gets life sentence for raping nine-year-old in Abuja

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, or NAPTIP, has hailed the ruling as a major victory in the fight against sexual violence. Abdullahi Abbass, a 19-year-old teacher, was sentenced to life in prison by a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja for raping his 9-year-old student.

Vincent Adekoye, the National Press Officer for NAPTIP, said in a statement released on Saturday that Justice M. Osho-Adebiyi of the FCT High Court pronounced the conviction.

The agency claims that on March 19, 2025, Abbass, who was employed at a private school in the Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, enticed the young child after school and sexually assaulted him through the anus.

“The convict was the class teacher of the victim. On March 19, 2025, after school hours, he sent another pupil to call the victim from home, took him to a nearby street, and raped him through the anus,” the statement read in part.

The victim told his mother about the assault, and she promptly informed the police, which resulted in Abbass’s apprehension and prosecution.

The instructor was charged with two offenses that teetered on the edge of sexual abuse and rape. After a thorough trial, he was convicted in October 29, 2025 of the crime under Section 2 of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015, which carries a life sentence.

In response to the ruling, Binta Adamu Bello, the Director-General of NAPTIP, praised the legal system and law enforcement for their prompt resolution of the matter.

“This is a landmark judgment that delivers the punishment commensurate with the crime. It will serve as a deterrent to others, and the convict’s name will be included in the national Sex Offenders Register,” Bello stated.

Reiterating NAPTIP’s commitment to stepping up efforts against rape, domestic violence, and other forms of sexual abuse nationwide, she also commended the Nigeria Police Force for their cooperation in the investigation and prosecution.
