In the Olosha neighborhood of Mushin, Lagos State, a 12-year-old kid named Wasiu was killed by a stray bullet after a bloody clash between competing cult groups.

According to reports, the altercation that sent shockwaves through the town happened on Wednesday at around 8:00 p.m.

Sources claim that when shooting broke out, Wasiu had gone outside to get food from a local seller known as Iya Ibeji.

Tale Amoo, a local, stated that people and business owners were compelled to evacuate or seek shelter due to the abrupt onset of violence. “We started hearing gunshots around 8:00 pm and people rushed into their homes. Shops were closed immediately,” Amoo recounted.

Amoo claims that when Wasiu was trying to escape for his life, he got caught in the gunfire. “He was at the food vendor’s stall waiting for his order when the chaos broke out. As he tried to escape, he was hit by a stray bullet,” he added.

After the firing stopped, Wasiu was discovered still, according to a second resident who asked to remain anonymous. Since the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) gate was apparently closed at the time, efforts to obtain him medical attention were unsuccessful.

“The area was too tense. No one knew immediately that Wasiu had been shot. When some residents found him and tried to take him to LUTH, the main gate was locked. They attempted to use another route, but the presence of the cultists along the way prevented access,” the resident said.

Residents of Mushin live in terror as a result of regular fights, according to community members, who claim that cult-related violence has increased recently.

Gunfire had been heard intermittently in the vicinity for hours, according to another local, who also asked not to be named out of worry for their safety. “There were continuous shootings from before 8 p.m. yesterday. The area near LUTH has been under siege. A child was killed during the violence,” the source said.

In a statement, Tubosun Aruwe, the vice chairman of Mushin Local Government Area, expressed his profound sadness over the child’s passing and denounced the violence.

“I am deeply saddened and utterly appalled by the senseless and violent attack that occurred last night in the Olosha area. The loss of an innocent child is a tragedy that strikes at the core of our humanity,” Aruwe stated.

He offered his sympathies to the family who had lost a loved one and to other victims of similar assaults, and he pledged to assist in the pursuit of justice for those involved.

“My heart goes out to the families affected during this difficult time. We stand together as a community and demand swift justice for these tragic events,” he said.

Aruwe also called on security services to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident and make sure those involved face consequences.

As of the time of writing, Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, has not returned calls or texts, thus attempts to contact the Command for comment were futile.
