The National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) has announced plans to commence nationwide protests starting August 6, 2025, over unresolved issues affecting its members. These issues include three and a half months of withheld salaries, non-implementation of the consequential adjustment for the new national minimum wage, and unfair sharing of the recently disbursed N50 billion Earned Allowances.

NAAT President, Comrade Ibeji Nwokoma, expressed frustration over the government’s lukewarm attitude toward addressing their demands. “The NEC in session frowned at the modalities used by the Federal Government in the sharing formula and disbursement of the ₦50 billion Earned Allowances (EA) and Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) arrears,” he said.

Key Demands

– Completion of Renegotiation: Completion of the renegotiation of the FGN/NAAT 2009 Agreement

– Minimum Wage Implementation: Implementation of the consequential adjustment of the new national minimum wage

– Withheld Salaries: Payment of the three and a half months of withheld salaries

– Occupational Hazard Allowance: Payment of arrears of seven months of occupational hazard allowance

– Responsibility Allowance: Payment of eleven months’ arrears of responsibility allowance

– Career Progression: Release of an enabling circular for career progression to CONTISS 14 & 15 for academic technologists

Protest Timeline:

– August 6: First nationwide protest

– August 13: Second nationwide protest

– August 20: National protest in Abuja

NAAT remains open to dialogue and constructive engagement with the government to resolve their grievances. However, if the government fails to act swiftly, the union will proceed with the planned protests. “We call on the general public, traditional and religious leaders, members of the National Assembly, and well-meaning Nigerians to intervene and prevail upon the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) to do the needful,” Nwokoma appealed
