The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has sent hundreds of students in the Faculty of Dentistry and Dental Surgery home due to over-admission beyond the approved quota by the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council.
The decision was made by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Banku Obi, after a meeting with the affected students and their parents. The students, from 200 to 600 levels, have been asked to vacate the campus until the university resolves the issue
The affected students have expressed outrage and frustration, citing the huge financial investments they’ve made in tuition, accommodation, and other expenses. They alleged that the university admitted more students than the quota given by the Medical Council of Nigeria, and are demanding justice and a reversal of the decision.
The Vice Chancellor has banned any form of protest against her decision, further fueling the tension. The situation remains unresolved, with the students awaiting a solution to the crisis
